This page has three topics: weightlifting, exercise, and healthy food intake. I separated exercise and weightlifting because many do one and not the other when both are crucial to having a healthy body. You don't have to be a professional body builder to be a successful weightlifter. Skeletal muscle mass is extremely important to joint health especially in people over the age of 30. After 30 your body starts to deteriorate (sometimes this is noticed before then) and if we don't compensate for that muscle loss, then our joints become arthritic and stiff. Bone loss is also noticed not so quickly in men but can in women (a.k.a. osteoporosis). Arthritis is more prevalent because the joints are not used nearly as much. Weightlifting doesn't have to be extreme, I would just start out with dumbbells and do a tier based workout or pyramid workout. What that means is do 3-5 sets; the first set should be higher repetitions with lower weight, then raise the weight and lower the number of repetitions. This builds two different type s of muscle: sprint type muscle and marathon type muscle. Don't overwork yourself; get your body used to it first. I would also recommend taking some type of energy bar to eat after so your body can recover faster. It's also a good idea to not eat a large meal before your workout.
I want to first talk about exercise. I workout, in addition to my kung fu training, about 4 times per week. At first you should workout every other day or every 2 days. Why so much rest? Because your body needs time to repair the additional damage you have done to it due to lack of exercise. Once you get into a routine and the workouts are getting easier you can shorten your rest time. But it's always important to rest, because your body is building up your muscles, bones, and your joints when you’re resting. Heart health is just as important as weightlifting because you need a strong heart to pump blood to all of the muscles you are building up. If you don't have a gym to work out in, do pushups. I do 240 pushups a week and it's a core part of my weight training.
Next is stretching, almost everyone hates stretching but it's more important, in my opinion than the working out portion. If you need guidance on what stretches to do, start with some simple yoga stretches from a book at you local library. If your muscles and joints aren't flexible, then chance of injury is greatly increased, ESPECIALLY THE BACK! How many people you know have back trouble, some have chronic or debilitating problems that could potentially be eliminated by stretching slowly and exercise. And stretching can be done everyday!! And hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds.
I am a vegetarian by choice, not by necessity. I do eat egg whites and avoid the yolks because that's where all of the fat and cholesterol is located. I have also eliminated dairy products out of my food regimen. I am not a vegetarian because of the way they treat animals (although that is one of the reasons but not the main point), I eat more fruits and vegetables because that's what God designed our bodies to need for repair, growth, and regeneration of tissue. I also research what ways I can make my eating habits better.
One of the first things I noticed was my need for 1 or 2 more meals each day because of my intake of more vegetables. Your digestive system, generally, processes the good things your body needs faster than the bad things. Your cravings for those fatty foods are much lower after a while. One important fact I would like to mention is if you do choose to have a vegetarian lifestyle you must keep 2 ideas in mind: 1) protein intake is much more important. 2) Vitamin B12 is important because it's mainly found in animals. A good start is checking out soy products, because it's an excellent source of plant protein. I would also like to mention staying away from whey protein, it's an animal protein. That's why I eat egg whites because it contains Vitamin B12. For breakfast, you can get the quick oats and mix honey or brown sugar with it and it only takes about five minutes or so. For those people who are on the go and don't have time to cook breakfast, I would suggest a multivitamin with your food. It's the next best way to get what you need (getting the nutrients from the source is always better though!).
Check this website out, it's a good start to finding out what foods you should eat and not eat. http://www.whfoods.com/foodstoc.php
